Kids are always
interested in WHALES!
Interested
in having us come to your school? Contact us using the info
at the bottom of the page. If you have a gym or large enough
multi-use room, we could even bring our 55 foot long
inflatable fin whale!
Educators pick
Newburyport Whale Watch for
their school field trips because of:
-
For our School
group outings we offer a special "no cancel trip".
Call our reservationists to explain the details.
-
Our big
boat - not all whale watch boats are the same! The 95 foot
Prince of Whales is one of the largest of its class
in the whale watch fleet. Even when at our capacity of 150
passengers, there are plenty of comfortable seats while
traveling, and lots of rail space for whale watching.
-
Our
fast boat - again, not all are the same! There is a
tremendous difference in the speeds of the various whale
watching boats. While some boats go as slow as 10 knots
(11.5 mph), our boat travels at close to 20 knots (23
mph). This means, in most cases, more time with the
whales, and sometimes it is the difference between seeing
whales and not.
-
Our
location - our dock is only 1 minute from Route 1, 5
minutes from I-95, and 7 minutes from I-495, with plenty
of on-site parking for cars and buses. Minutes from New
Hampshire!
-
Our
location (again!) - not only is Newburyport easy to get
to, but its position relative to the two feeding grounds
gives us the option each trip of going either east to
Jeffreys Ledge or south to Stellwagen Bank. This is
important! Often one area may be quiet in terms of
whale activity, while the other is very active.
-
Our
affiliation with
The Blue Ocean Society allows us to have expert,
experienced naturalists aboard to work with your students
to better understand these magnificent animals. The Blue
Ocean Society uses many onboard teaching tools
like
baleen, a whale barnacle, sounds of whales on a CD player,
posters and fact books about whales which help in creating
this understanding.
-
Our
affiliation with
WhaleNet - this is one of the most popular sites on
the internet for students, teachers and researchers
looking to share ideas and information on whale related
topics. J. Michael Williamson, founder and Director of
WhaleNet, teaches graduate level courses in the summer,
geared for educators. Each course includes several whale
watches, and we are proud that J. Michael chooses to use
Newburyport Whale Watch.
-
Public
information display - In the main cabin of the
Prince of Whales are two state-of-the-art marine
electronics units. The first is a fathometer/fish finder.
It shows a cross section view of the water between our
boat and the ocean bottom, reads water depth and
temperature, and will also show any schools of fish
underneath us, which allows you to make a good guess as to
how deep the whales are going in search of food. The
second unit is a chart plotter. This amazing machine
displays a color map of the area and, using input from GPS
satellites, displays a flashing boat at our exact
location. It also will display a track line showing where
we have traveled on our voyage. Kids and their teachers
can tell at a glance where we are, and where we have been
since leaving the dock.
-
Our long-term
commitment to whale research & education - In our 22nd
year, we are among the earliest contributors to the
humpback whale catalog produced by researchers at the
College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, and
The Blue Ocean
Society
continues to send them their I.D. photos taken aboard the
Prince of Whales each year. It has
been both amazing and gratifying to see the number of
identified humpbacks in the North Atlantic grow from a
mere handful in the mid-1970's to over a thousand today.
