10) 50-ton
Humpback whales that go south for the winter do not eat for
several months. They live off the energy stored in their
blubber layer.
9) A newborn
Finback whale weighs 4,000 pounds, and during the first
summer, as we are watching it, the calf will gain over 150
pounds each day!
8) A large adult
Finback weighs more than 25 Ford Explorers, each with a family
of four inside.
7) Bowhead
whales can live to be over 200 years old!
6) A Humpback's
pectoral fins - arms for you and us - are the longest of any
animal in the world. Up to 15 feet, and each fin can weigh
over 1,000 pounds.
5) If one day
you shared breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Humpback whale -
and due to his insistence, each meal consisted solely of
sardines - after dinner your hungry companion would have 6,500
empty sardine cans next to his chair!
4) Atlantic
